Why You Should Grow Fortex Beans

Fortex beans are one of our favorites to grow in our NYC garden because of how productive their yield is. In just one 4×8 garden bed we can easily grow up to 5 pounds of beans a week!

Here’s the key reasons why you need to grow them:

  • They’re delicious, tender beans. You can eat them fresh or in any green bean dish you can dream of. They also freeze great .
  • They’re stringless. No extra work when cooking or canning!
  • They only take about 60- 70 days from seed to full maturity, which makes them a quick bean variety to grow.
  • They’re giant! And so much fun to grow and pick!

How Big Do Fortex Beans Grow?

Fortex beans are a giant bean, easily producing beans that are over a foot long! It’s up to you if you want to pick them early or wait until they’re full size, but even when they are that big they’re still tender to eat (even fresh) – so you don’t have to worry about then becoming hard to chew. My kids happily nibble on these raw beans while they’re picking them in the garden without any problem (and they love them!).

The actual plants easily grow 6-7 feet tall, so make sure to build a trellis or poles to help support these vigorous climbers! For reference my husband Matthew is 6 feet tall. 🙂

When Should You Pick Fortex Beans?

You can start picking fortex beans when they’re around 7 inches long, but you can keep them growing until they’re over a foot long! Simply snap them off the plant every 2-3 days to stay ahead of them as they are high producers.
